Suspension of Regional Training Meetings – CME, MERIT and NERRAG meetings currently suspended http://endocrinenortheast.co.uk/suspension-of-regional-training-meetings-cme-merit-and-nerrag-meetings-currently-suspended/ http://endocrinenortheast.co.uk/suspension-of-regional-training-meetings-cme-merit-and-nerrag-meetings-currently-suspended/#respond Thu, 26 Mar 2020 14:42:43 +0000 http://endocrinenortheast.co.uk/?p=837 Due to the COVID-19 / coronavirus pandemic, it is necessary to currently cancel regional training events. This includes the planned June CME and the 2020 NERRAG meeting. In addition, the regional MERIT programme is currently on hold.

This is rightly to allow us to focus on the important priority of clinical care in the face of the challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic. It will also help to avoid non-essential travel and social contact.

The North East has a very proud track record of excellent regional training events, and whilst this temporary suspension of the programme is a sad necessity, we look forward to re-starting the programme with all our enthusiasm on the other side of the current crisis.

In the meantime, lets get on with the work of looking after our patients, each other and ourselves.

Stay well everyone,

Owain

Speakers including Prof Simon Pearce, Prof Steve Ball, Dr Anna Micthell, Dr Catherine Napier, Dr Sath Nag, and Dr Arutchelvam shared their time, experience and enthusiasm with potential future trainees. There was a great turn out and engaged attendees, and hopefully more than a few minds were made up that a career in Diabetes & Endocrinology is a great choice!

Ongoing Research in the North East Update – Study of predicting remission in Graves’ disease (SPRING) http://endocrinenortheast.co.uk/ongoing-research-in-the-north-east-update-study-of-predicting-remission-in-graves-disease-spring/ http://endocrinenortheast.co.uk/ongoing-research-in-the-north-east-update-study-of-predicting-remission-in-graves-disease-spring/#respond Thu, 04 Jul 2019 10:18:16 +0000 http://endocrinenortheast.co.uk/?p=768 Standard medical practice is to treat Graves’ disease with antithyroid drugs for 12-18 months and then to stop treatment. However, predicting who will relapse and who will remain in prolonger remission following antithyroid drugs is not robust. TRAb antibodies are predictive of relapse and these are secreted from terminally differentiated B lymphocytes, known as plasma cells. A cohort of 120 Graves’ disease patients who are about to stop taking antithyroid (thionamide) medication following at least 12 months of treatment will be recruited. Following recruitment, details of patient presentation including baseline serum thyroid function, thyroid stimulating hormone receptor antibody levels and peroxidase antibodies will be recorded. Serum and blood for DNA and peripheral blood mononuclear cells will be taken twice; immediately before stopping antithyroid drugs and 6 weeks later. Patient phenotype of remission or relapse one year after cessation of antithyroid medication will be used to categorise for analysis of B lymphocyte markers and RNA-sequencing, aiming to have up to 50 or more patient samples available per group. We will develop a predictive test that may allow us to determine which patients will remain in remission following antithyroid drugs and also allow us to understand more about the B lymphocyte biology behind remission.

He would greatly appreciate your support in raising money for this great cause:

“Dear all,

I am raising money for Diabetes UK by doing the Great North Run. It is just over a month away and my training is going reasonably well (although my knees are giving me a bit of bother!) and hopefully I will be able to limp all the way round!
I would be grateful for any sponsorship you could offer.

Many thanks,

David”
